Thunder Bay, Ontario — BAY Credit Union is proud to celebrate its 80th anniversary on March 15, 2026, marking eight decades of serving members and supporting the local community.
Founded in 1946, BAY Credit Union was built on the cooperative principle of “people helping people.” For 80 years, the organization has remained committed to providing member-focused financial services while reinvesting locally and supporting community growth.
“Reaching 80 years is an important milestone for our organization,” said Lynne LeGros, CEO. “Our longevity reflects the trust our members place in us and the dedication of our staff, past and present. As a member-owned financial institution, our success has always been rooted in the strength of our community.”
Credit unions operate under a cooperative model, meaning members are also owners. This structure traces back to early cooperative pioneers and expanded in Canada through the work of Alphonse Desjardins, who founded Canada’s first credit union in 1900 in Lévis. BAY Credit Union proudly continues that tradition in Northwestern Ontario.
Over the decades, BAY Credit Union has supported local families, businesses, and community initiatives through responsible lending, financial guidance, and community partnerships. Decisions are made locally, ensuring that members’ needs remain the top priority.
To mark the occasion, BAY Credit Union will host an in-branch celebration through the rest of March 2026, recognizing members and staff who have contributed to its success over the past eight decades.
“As we celebrate our history, we remain focused on the future,” added Kerry Morden, COO. “Our commitment to personalized service, financial strength, and community investment remains as strong today as it was in 1946.”
Established in 1946, BAY Credit Union is a member-owned financial cooperative serving the Thunder Bay community. Guided by cooperative principles and a commitment to local decision-making, BAY Credit Union provides a full range of personal and business banking services while reinvesting in the community it serves.
